The Montessori method is an educational approach and philosophy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. It emphasizes individualized learning, allowing each child to progress at their own pace. Key aspects of the Montessori method include fostering independence, promoting hands-on learning and creating a carefully prepared environment that supports growth in all major developmental areas.
In the Montessori environment, mixed-age classrooms are the norm. These classrooms promote social cohesion within the group, as younger children look up to their older classmates as mentors and role models. Over a three-year period, children experience the full cycle of social living within the group. Each child learns at their own level and pace, regardless of age, fostering an atmosphere free from competition and expectations to learn the same material simultaneously. This approach allows every child to progress and thrive according to their unique abilities and interests.
Our Primary program will begin with 12 children aged 3-5 years, guided by one teacher and supported by an intern. The Lower Elementary group will accommodate 20-24 children aged 6-9 years, with two certified teachers. The Upper Elementary group will also have 20-24 children, aged 9-12 years, led by one certified teacher and an assistant.
Children can transition to any educational path their parents choose. For those wishing to continue with the Montessori method, YNZ Montessori High School would be an ideal option. Alternatively, if parents prefer their child to pursue a Dutch education, they might consider MAVO, HAVO, or De Schakel, among others.
It is important for parents to inform the teacher by grade 4 to ensure the child has sufficient time to practice the Dutch language and prepare for the “doorstroomtoets” exam.
Every child can benefit from a Montessori education, but here in Aruba, we are an alternative educational option. Some children may require one-on-one attention throughout the day, which we are unable to provide. Additionally, certain situations may necessitate the involvement of other specialized professionals.
Children can join our Primary program starting at age 3 and our Elementary program starting at age 6. Preference is given to children already familiar with the Montessori method. The earlier a child begins with Montessori, the better, as younger children are in a sensitive period for absorbing information and concepts from their environment. Consequently, we only accept new students up to the age of 8 to ensure they do not miss critical parts of the Montessori curriculum. Starting at a young age in the Montessori environment offers numerous benefits.
